Data Use Policy

Last updated: January 2026

Overview

This Data Use Policy explains how your data flows through Instructionly when you use our platform with AI-powered IDEs. We believe in transparency about what data we access, process, and store.

How Instructionly Works

Instructionly acts as a bridge between your coding standards and AI-powered IDEs using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Here's what happens when you use our service:

1

You Create Instructions

You define coding standards, guidelines, and best practices in your Instructionly workspace. This content is stored securely on our servers.

2

Your IDE Requests Instructions

When you use an AI feature in your IDE, it requests relevant instructions from our MCP server. We receive only the request metadata—not your code.

3

We Deliver Your Guidelines

Our server returns the matching instructions to your IDE. The AI then uses these instructions to generate code that follows your standards.

What We DO Access

  • Your Instructions: The coding guidelines and standards you create in Instructionly
  • Request Metadata: Information about which skills were requested, timestamps, and usage metrics
  • Account Information: Your name, email, and workspace settings
  • Usage Patterns: How you interact with the Instructionly web application

What We DO NOT Access

  • Your Source Code: We never see, store, or process your codebase
  • AI Conversations: We don't see what you ask the AI or what it generates
  • File Contents: We have no access to files in your IDE or repositories
  • Git History: We don't access your version control history
  • IDE State: We don't know what files you have open or what you're working on

AI Provider Data Handling

When you use Instructionly with AI-powered IDEs:

  • Your instructions are sent to the AI provider (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI) as context for code generation
  • This is handled by your IDE, not by Instructionly
  • Each AI provider has their own data policies regarding how they handle prompts and context
  • We recommend reviewing your AI provider's data policies
